Detention Door Frame Specifications

Frames are to be 12 or 14 gauge steel welded units. For exterior exposure, steel to be galvanized per ASTM A563 A60.

Frame corners to be mitered and fully welded for the complete profile – visible welds to be ground smooth.

Provide a minimum of 3 anchors per side as detailed with an additional anchor for fastening to the floor. At glazed openings, space anchors approximately 24" o.c.

Frames shall be neatly mortised and reinforced for all mortise-type hardware and shall be drilled and tapped at the factory. For surface-applied items, drilling and tapping shall be done in the field.

Minimum reinforcing as follows: Surface hardware .0747" steel; lock reinforcing .125" steel; hinge reinforcing .180" steel, weld reinforcing to frame with continuous weld the full width of the reinforcing top and bottom.

Glass stops to be heavy gauge steel angles or channels attached to frames with tamper-resistant security type screws. Screws shall be located approximately 8" o.c., no more than 3" from corners.

Provide steel spreaders temporarily welded to the bottom of both jambs to adequately serve as a brace during shipping and handling of frames.

All surfaces are to be thoroughly cleaned of all oil, grease and other impurities and then chemically etched. All irregularities shall be filled and sanded to give a completely smooth surface. Apply one (1) coat of rust inhibitive primer baked on to a minimum of (1) mil dry thickness.

Metal cover boxes shall be furnished over all hardware cutouts occurring in concrete masonry walls, or where frames are filled with plaster grout. In addition, protect all areas where screws penetrate thru the frame into grout or concrete (such as glazing screws) by adequate means to permit removal and reinsertion of the screws.

Frames that incorporate electric lock pockets shall have proper conduit from the lock pocket to the door position switch installed at the factory by the frame manufacturer.

Relite and sidelight frames: Form as integral units with multiple or special openings as indicated. Form mullion and/or rail members as closed tubular shapes with no visible seams or joints; form corner joints mitered and continuously welded; and grind smooth. Where necessary for handling or installation, frames may be fabricated in sections for field splicing; splices shall be designed for finishing rigid, strong and smooth.
